County Wicklow rests on Irelandís Eest coast, overlooking the Irish Sea. The county was named after the town of Wicklow (which derives from the Old Norse name VŪkingalŠg or Wykynlo). County Wicklow was the last of the original counties to be established in Ireland in 1606 from land previously part of County Dublin and County Carlow Establishment as a distinct county was aimed at controlling some of the local groups, such as the O'Byrnes.
