Waterford (Port Láirge in Irish) comes from the Old Norse name meaning "ram fjord" or "windy fjord". Waterford sits on Ireland’s south coast and has two mountain ranges, the Knockmealdown Mountains and the Comeragh Mountains.
County Waterford is known in Ireland as "The Déise" (An Déise), due to the fact that some time between the 4th and 8th centuries, a native Gaelic tribe called the Déisi were driven from the southern parts of the country, conquering and settling here.
