About Athlone

Athlone today is a thriving town enjoying a central location in the Heart of Ireland. It is at the confluence of the major east-west and north-south routes and is well served by both bus and rail transport.
Athlone is an ideal base from which to visit the Irish Midlands. In the rich hinterland one can sample the wild beauty of the Irish bogs, the delights of the Shannon and Lough Ree as well as the great monastic site of Clonmacnoise and the beautiful Goldsmith Country.

John Count McCormack was born in Athlone on June 14th 1884. His father, Andrew McCormack had been lured to Athlone, from Galasheils in the Scottish lowlands by the prospect of employment in Athlone Woollen Mills.
