County Longford (from the Irish An Longfort, meaning "The Fortification") is a county in the province of Leinster.
The county was a centre of the 1798 rebellion, when the French expeditionary force, led by Humbert, were defeated outside the village of Ballinamuck by Cromwell’s English army. Considerable reprisals were inflicted by the British on the civilian population of the county in the aftermath of the battle.
Most of Longford lies in the basin of the River Shannon, where it forms its western boundary, giving the area around Lough Ree some fantastic waterscapes.
