General information Derry

County Derry, also known as Londonderry, is one of six counties that form Northern Ireland, situated in the north of the island of Ireland

The county’s highest point is the summit of Sawel Mountain (678m), part of the Sperrin Mountains on the border with County Tyrone. The mountain range dominates the southern skyline of the county, with the valleys of the Bann and Foyle rivers to the east and west, the shore of Lough Neagh in the south-east, and the steep cliffs and remarkable beaches of the Atlantic coast to the north. Derry is truly a county of great natural beauty.

The county also has number of sites of historical interest, including the well-preserved 17th-century city walls of Derry, the National Trust-owned Plantation estate at Springhill, the Mussenden Temple and the noted bird sanctuaries on the eastern shore of Lough Foyle.
