Attractions
Westport
is a planned market town which was laid out
in the 1770s and this is reflected in the buildings
in the town. At the head of Clew Bay stands
Westport House built on the site of an O'Malley
castle. It has a very imposing interior adorned
with family portraits, antique furniture and
Waterford chandeliers. The estate also features
a boating lake, miniature railway, children's
zoo and several shops. Croagh Patrick, Ireland's
holy mountain is one of County Mayo's premier
landmarks. There are panoramic views of Clew
Bay from the top for anyone undertaking the
two hour climb. Achill Island can be reached
by a road bridge and is best viewed from the
stunning Atlantic Coast Drive which circles
the island.
